Evaluation Question 7

The Evaluation Question 7
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

We will be comparing our continuity editing task to our final product and what we learnt and improved from our continuity editing task that we did.

What mistakes did we make during the continuity exercise?
Some of the cuts, such as when James is walking down the stairs there is a close up of his feet which comes in too late, makes the product look very unprofessional and unfinished. We have learnt to cut the clips to flow between each other better which is called continuity editing, making the flow of the film run more smoothly and easier to understand. Making slight adjustments to the timing of clips so that movement isn’t shown twice or not at all helps to make a sequence more fluent and easier to watch.

This shows how we improved our cuts between our continuity edit and our final product, in the images above. In our Continuity edit we had dark scenes which you couldn’t really see and they also looked bad as well. This meant that we lost the effect of the piece. To change this in our final film we added effects and filters to make it brighter if that was needed.

What did we learn from the mistakes during the task?
We learnt the lighting is important to help the audience easily see the subject and now we know it is easy to solve this problem with the use of artificial  lights. Also cutting in the correct places adding easily adds to how well finished the overall product looks and doing some simple continuity editing shows that we understand how to show the audience what is happening using editing making it easy for them to understand if the subject is moving from one place to another with either using a jump cut, or a transition showing a passing of time.

In the full product, how did we ensure we didn’t make the same mistakes?
In the full product we made sure we didn’t make the same mistakes by making the most out of the natural lighting conditions. We made sure we had the correct take of filming before moving on and we also worked well together. When we were out shooting are footage we made sure the equipment was looked after and the tripod was set up properly. This is because we wanted all of our shots to be still unless it was GoPro footage. When it came to the editing of our full product we made sure we cut the footage in the correct place and made sure that we were doing continuity editing. We used plenty of jump cuts and transition which shows the audience a passing of time.

What could we do better next time?
Next time we could do better at your selected roles in the group. This would mean that others who are more experienced in the group would be doing the difficult jobs. This would have made the whole finished product a lot more professional looking.

How did we develop our narrative?
This took the excitement and the thrill out of the film. This was the big mistake that we made in the preliminary task. we changed this by shortening most of the scenes. This added more excitement and more enigma into our piece.

The cuts on the preliminary task were rough and often in the wrong place. When James walks down the stairs, we waited too long before cutting to his feat. This made the next of cuts in rapid  succession and gave the feel that the preliminary task was rushed. This gave us a different look than the one that we were looking at. As well as this we didn’t select the music so we ended up with a part where a character enters with the Jaws theme behind him. This was unprofessional and didn’t give the effect that we wanted.
